Yesterday, Riot Games announced First Strike, a series of tournaments across its eight regions, as the next step for competitive Valorant. After the completion of the “Ignition Series” last month, fans have been patiently waiting for the next steps for the competitive scene.
Unlike Riot’s previous Games such as League of Legends, Riot has focused predominately on supporting 3rd party tournaments to be the foundation of Valorant’s competitive eco-system. But this new series of tournaments will be their first attempt at hosting a 1st party tournament for Valorant.
First Strike will be a series of tournaments for professional and amateur teams across all eight regions. Tournaments will be hosted in North America, Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, Turkey, Asia, Oceania, Brazil, and the Middle East. The official tournament start date has not yet been announced. Still, the tournament is expected to take place across October – December. This means amateur teams looking to compete will have little time to organize.
An online qualifier will be run by an independent 3rd-party organizer sometime in October. The final will then continue until only 8 teams remain from each region. These teams will then compete in their regions respective “First Strike Finals” from December 3rd-6th until a victor is announced.
Valorant’s Executive Producer, Anna Donlon, also adds, “Esports remains one of the best investments we can make to support our community for the long term. As we’ve already seen from the Ignition Series, there’s a huge demand and hunger for VALORANT to be played at a professional level, and we’re so excited to be starting that journey with fans, players, and organizations. As a development team, supporting the competitive world of VALORANT is one of our top priorities, and we are committed to this journey.”
First Strike is gearing up to be an exciting tournament that will spark regional rivalries between established teams and new up-and-coming ones as they all fight to earn the right to call themselves “the first official regional Valorant champions.
